How to read it

The chapters are a sequence, not a set of subjects: each one ends where the next begins. Every chapter is also a PDF, and the two carry thesame editorial work: the same text, the same tables and the same sources. Neither is a summary of the other.

Part I. Deciding

  1. 01
Migration does not start with a tool

A migration tool moves content. It does not decide what deserves to move, who says so, or what "it worked" means. Those three answers are the project.

  2. 02
Know your estate before you choose its future

You cannot plan what you have not counted. Every destination question in this book has a number behind it, and the numbers come from the farm, not from the people who run it.

  3. 03
    What decides the destination

A destination is chosen by constraints, not by fashion. Size rarely decides; dependencies almost always do.

    Chapter 3 as PDF
  4. 04
    Making and defending a recommendation

A recommendation should survive a product update. A feature comparison does not.

    Chapter 4 as PDF
  5. 05
    Building the business case

Financial precision must not exceed evidential precision.

    Chapter 5 as PDF
  6. 06
    Governance before technology

A migration copies your governance whether you wrote it down or not.

Part II. What is there

  1. 07
    Versions and lifecycle

The calendar is a migration driver with a signature on it.

    Chapter 7 as PDF
  2. 08
    Verify what actually moved

A migration report is the producer's account of its own work.

    Chapter 8 as PDF
  3. 09
Cut over without losing the truth

The source keeps changing until the day you stop it, and that day is later than you think.

    Chapter 9 as PDF
  4. 13
    Permissions

Here, permissions are not security. They are migration evidence.

What the Field Guide is, and is not

Field Guide owns the ordered method for executing a SharePoint migration, read in sequence. It is the only place on this site that does.
